House in Valdez, AK
55.4 miles from Pippin Lake
Thompson House is historic, quirky, unique and comfortable. It survived the 1964 9.2 earthquake and tsunami that caused Old Valdez to relocate to the new and present town site. An addition more than doubled the size of the original one room cabin which included an extensive remodel. The house sleeps 8. There are three bedrooms and a half bath upstairs, the master with a queen bed, the second with three twins, and a twin in the tower recommended for anyone over the age of 12. There is a queen futon available downstairs if required. The full bath and sauna are steps apart on the main floor. Newly refurbished, Thompson House offers Wi fi, TV, blue ray player, new kitchen appliances, microwave, washer, dryer, freezer, on demand water heater and Toyo heater. No need to chop and haul wood! There is off street parking in front of the house. Centrally located, it is only steps to one of the two grocery stores in town, a few blocks to the harbor, a bank and ATM, restaurants, museums, art shops, gift shops, harbor drive, beaches, ponds and down town. At the end of the Bremner St, where the house sits, you'll find a park strip with the Buccaneer Pirate Ship playground. The college is the home to the Maxine Whitney Museum and just behind it is another playground called the Treehouse park. Valdez is a small and very cute town. You'll find the locals to be friendly, kind and helpful. Choose from the many fishing guides and out fitters, kayak rentals, excursions to the glaciers, and extensive wild life on land and in the sea. The beauty of the mountains surrounds the town with waterfalls everywhere.

55.7 miles from Pippin Lake
Summer time in Valdez brings a myriad of fun things to do. Valdez has unprecedented access to Mother Nature in full force and is home to many land animals, sea life, birds and more. Wildflowers grace the miles of trails in and around Valdez. Humpback and orca whales make their home in the Prince William Sound. Glaciers nest atop towering mountains as majestic waterfalls pour from the melting ice and snow. Some glaciers reach all the way to the ocean and greet the tide with their impressive size. Whether you find yourself on land or sea, there’s always something to do in Valdez. Experiencing the Prince William Sound is a must. Surrounded by the Chugach National Forest (the second largest National forest in the U.S.), the Prince William Sound contains various tidewater glaciers including Columbia Glacier ( the largest tidewater glacier in South central Alaska), and Meares Glacier (one of two advancing tide water glaciers in North America). Valdez has the largest port in all of Prince William Sound. Come visit us and take half day, full day or extended tours of Prince William Sound and get the best vantage points for glaciers, whales, mountain goats, sea otters, seals, puffins, sea lions, shorebirds and so much more. Excursion vessels, glacier and wildlife tour boats, rental boats, charters, and sail boats depart from the Small Boat Harbor for fishing, sightseeing and lodge transport. Or, take a helicopter to see our impressive mountains, glaciers, wildlife and Prince William Sound. Skim the seas on a guided nature kayak tour or take an extended camping trip. Guided raft trips will take you past towering waterfalls of Keystone Canyon. Fly-outs and drop-offs are possible to remote locations in the Sound and Chugach Mountains. Be sure to sample Valdez's rich history by visiting one or all three of the local museums. VALDEZ is the snow capital of the U.S.A. Really THE location for the best heli-skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice climbing, fat bike riding, cross-country skiing in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska. Valdez has an incredible variety of terrain at your fingertips, with most areas heavily glaciated, plus more steep mountain faces, large powder bowls, longer couloirs and everything in between you won't find anywhere else.

Our Guest Houses Our spacious, smoke free guest houses offer the “creature comforts” that will help you relax after a great day of fun exploring in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park and Preserve. All six of our guest houses are Alaskan style log homes. They all have a full kitchen, private bath and a private bedroom with a luxurious queen bed and power 24/7. We also now offer high speed internet in each guest house. The guest houses are arranged along a ridge that offers great views to the east and south for morning sun, with a buffer zone of vegetation between each unit to ensure your privacy. Large decks are just perfect for enjoying a beverage or cooking a meal on the provided gas grill. You can drive up to each guest house and park right in front for easy unloading and loading of your luggage and supplies. We also provide plenty of parking in a parking area just below the houses that is safe and secure. Despite being well equipped in many regards, we don’t have irons, toasters, televisions or microwaves in the houses to help us conserve our electricity. We do provide free WiFi in each guest house and our office. There are also WIFI hotspots in McCarthy and Kennecott provided by Copper Valley Telephone for your convenience. In the summer of 1993, we built our home in McCarthy. For the last 25 summers, we have worked and played in McCarthy, our favorite place on Earth. We have seen many changes in the local area, including a change from CB and satellite radios for local and outside communications to full cell phone service with internet access in 2008. In 1996 a pedestrian footbridge was erected across the Kennicott River replacing the hand-pulled trams that were built in 1983. Access to the McCarthy area is easier these days as is communicating with the ‘outside’ world. It is a challenge to slow down the inevitable change and use only that which makes our lives better. Andy’s background is in mountain climbing, survival training, satellite based internet installations and construction. This summer will be Andy’s second summer off after working for 16 seasons for the National Park Service on the historical building restoration project at Kennecott. Cynthia is a teacher for the the Valdez City Schools District located in Valdez, Alaska where she is happily teaching kindergartners. Our sons, Matthew (24) and Robert (21), enjoy the long days of sunlight during the summer. They have hiked on the glacier, explored the underside of the glacier, visited ice caves, and learned the names of our local plants and animals. If you visit in late July or August, we’ll share some freshly picked garden vegetables with you! You are also welcome to borrow books from our office if you wish to learn more about the human and natural history of the local area.

Cabin (192 sq. ft.) in McCarthy, AK
76.6 miles from Pippin Lake
Nestled in the forest near the toe of the Kennicott Glacier, our 5 eco friendly, private log cabins offer a comfortable place to rest after a day of exploring the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Our cabins, completed in 2015, were modeled after nearby original trapper cabins. Each cabin has 2 full size beds, a small kitchen set up with running water, and a drinking water filtration system. The cabins share a shower house with hot water (also considered a luxury in this neck of the woods!), along with an outhouse. Linens, dishware, and towels are all provided. Bicycles are also available for our guests! McCarthy, Alaska was not the first town established to support the mining town of Kennicott. The town of Blackburn was first established in the early 1900’s as a settlement of hopeful workers and businessmen. In 1911, the Blackburn Roadhouse was built. It was a two-story structure built with logs and milled wood, and at the time it was considered the “biggest log structure in the district.” Because its location was not on the direct route of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway, Blackburn did not endure. The Blackburn schoolhouse was hauled to Kennicott and the remaining buildings fell into disrepair. All that remains are indentations where buildings once stood, and one sole outhouse. Our cabins are built on the old townsite of Blackburn. They offer a peaceful setting for visitors to spend the night away from the hustle and bustle of downtown McCarthy, yet close enough to walk or bike to town to visit the museum or have a bite to eat!

Chalet (1074 sq. ft.) in Palmer, AK
125 miles from Pippin Lake
The Alaska Lodge at Wolverine Lake is located just 59 miles north of Anchorage International Airport on a beautiful lake with no public access and surrounded by the Chugach mountain range. It is a rare occasion to see anyone on the lake that is not connected to the lodge. There are 4 main reasons why I believe The Alaska Lodge is the best place in Alaska for your next vacation. You get to feel the Real Alaska wilderness and have amazing views without having to take a bush plane into a remote location and be hours from civilization. We will gladly help you book excursions and give you a locals insight into our area. Our Native Wild Rainbow Trout fishing is fantastic and we include boats, fishing gear (including poles and lures) pans for gold panning, ice crampons for walking on the glacier and other items to make your vacation the most memorable one you have ever had. Please note*** April 15 till June 15th fishing is not allowed because of spawning season. You are centrally located between Denali National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and the Kenai River and all that area has to offer. *** We (the owners) live on property in the converted daylight basement of the Chalet. There are 3 doors and a floor separating the daylight basement unit and the 3 bedroom, 2 bath unit of the Chalet. There is no sound transfer so there is never a need to worry that you are being too loud or that we will disturb you. *** Across the boardwalk and on the other side of the game room and hot tub, is our two story three bedroom / two bath cabin. We usually host two groups of guests at a time, but generally they are not on property at the same time. One might day be on a day cruise, fishing excursion, hiking tour, ATV trip, flight seeing adventure, etc., while the other is enjoying the lake and our property.
